Cute stuffed animal darning try out?

I want to make a cute stuffed animal for my friend.
I dont have felt, but I have rolls of fabric and a darning machine.
I would also like it to be mildly simple to make

This is super cute. I am building one for my daughter. I am darning by hand because I don't have a machine. It's really simple. It does call for some pieces of felt, but I'm sure you may maybe improvise.
